"Mubango"

This was painted soon after returning from my first visit to Gabon. It is deeply connected with my first initiation into the shamanic tradition of Bwiti. Within the all night ceremonies that take place deep in the jungle, the participants will wear white and red kaolin (clay) facepaint, that slowly dries and cracks as the night progresses. To be surrounded... by these faces as they emerge from the darkness can be frightening, and I am aware that this painting sometimes has that effect on people. But when you understand that it is only your own fear itself that is scary, you may well start to see the benevolence, care and love that lies behind our masks (clay or otherwise!).
Mubango is the name of a spirit, and it was also the first name i recieved in this tradition
